About OffWorld Percussion™

OffWorld™ was launched in the summer of 2008 as a vehicle to present our cutting edge implements to percussionists worldwide. The company is based in the cool green of the Pacific Northwest, USA, which has continued to become a veritable melting pot for percussive-arts professionals and related industry in recent years.

The origins of OffWorld™ began with pursuits by percussionist Dave C. Lauder the late 80‘s, inventing pads for his personal use that were a departure from the standard fare. In 1993 with the help of a gifted friend, the late Jeffrey C. Olson, new concepts were tested involving surfacing and other components, then aimed more specifically towards use by the members of the renown University of Oregon Drumline of which Dave was member. One of these designs included the infamous “Bacon” (left), a device comprised of 4 separate, interlocking sections or planks, inlayed with numerous gum rubber surface elements per plank. The unit could be unfurled and placed down the length of a tour bus during travel to benefit ensemble-based practice by multiple percussionists.

One of the first designs implementing a true rim component was a customized 6” gum rubber octagon (right), outfitted with 1/4” thick, rare purpleheart hardwood outer staves. These were placed at a slight rise over the existing playing surface to allow for a definitive and realistic rim-shot option when struck. The concepts the development of these units pioneered were to prove essential to the creation of the Patented INVADER™ series practice pads. This device became notorious while mounted into the steering column of Dave’s VW bus for many years.

From these early designs have emerged refinements and new products further augmented by fellow musician/engineer Paul Howard, which have led us towards production of the distinctive and other-worldly percussion implements we offer today.

Our products are truly hand-made creations, crafted with a careful dedication to quality and a level of precision which continues to champion the greater percussive art form which inspires and motivates our work.
